The Good Gym

First and foremost I would like to announce that I just ran 8k! Wooohoooo! Well, last night in fact but I'm still so excited about it, to top it off it was all for a good cause.

Last night my Uni friends and I headed down to the London Aquatics Centre equipped with all of our flashy camera gear, to produce some work for one of our group projects due in May. So, I won't reveal too much on the project side of things. But, what I will tell you is that we met up with a group of lovely people from The Good Gym who organise weekly (sometimes daily) run sessions for a greater cause.

Who are The Good Gym?
"GoodGym helps you get fit by doing good: we'll connect you with physical tasks that benefit your community and keep you fit. Run in a pack to work on a community project, do one off missions to help vulnerable people or commit to visiting an isolated older person. You'll get the help of a qualified trainer and support to achieve your goals".

Our qualified trainer was a young lady named Kirsty who was very welcoming and supportive of our newbie needs. Kirsty advised us that we would be running to Wansted Flats.. WOAH! Stop right there, "you expect me to run to a whole different borough?" I was not at all prepared for this run, it was coursework deadline day at Uni, in which I spent most of the day and my energy levels glued to a PC, the moment I heard Wansted Flats I was surrendering to quit. Two members of our uni group had been volunteered to partake in the run, those two "lucky" people were myself and Kwame. Kwame and Kirsty convinced me that I could do the run and that they would pace themselves with me along the way. *sigh* here goes, no turning back now; plus the camera is on me so I've gotta look like I'm loving this.

We start the run at a steady pace whilst incorporating some warm up drills. I was pretty comfortable with the first 2.5km of the run. Since my run with the e20 Tigers (Nike) I've been getting out there and running like there's no tomorrow clocking up some more km on my Nike+ app.

As we cross the threshold over to Leyton, the panic kicks in, "are we there yet?" "How much further?" "I can't breathe" by the time I finished moaning we had actually made it to the half way point, we reached our destination; The Sports Pavillion in Wanstead, the home of the many football teams that play on the 60 different pitches. Our mission; to paint the tainted walls back to a bright white.
I got stuck in and felt right at home as I've been painting my new flat the last couple of weeks. We only had 35 minutes to complete our task before we had to head back out on run. With two rollers, five brushes and a great amount of teamwork we managed to get an awful lot done. Mission accomplished!

They say the journey is always quicker on the way back and it sure was. I DID IT! 8K! I made it to the finish line, and I managed to get a wall painting, cardio busting break in between.

Massive thank you to Kirsty and the guys at Good Gym Newham for having Kwame and I join in on the fun.

Now time for us and the rest of the group to work on our project.
